A very warm thank you to everyone who has signed the petition!

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to afford the same level of protection to the families of Scots who die abroad as is currently in place for their English counterparts by amending the Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Enquiries (Scotland) Act 1976 to require the holding of a fatal accident enquiry when a Scot dies abroad.

English law, currently allows the coroner to investigate any sudden death abroad and has the right to hold a coroners inquest into the death of an English resident abroad if they feel that there has not been a robust judicial enquiry in that country. However in Scotland there is no law that allows the crown office to hold a fatal accident enquiry in the event that a Scot dies suddenly abroad.

What is happening more regularly now is that the advice Colins mother was given - "bury your son in England and he will get a full investigation" is being disseminated to people in that awful predicament.

We have been working hard to try and come up with the best solution to changing the law in Scotland. We have decided that this would be best served by means of a petition to the Scottish Parliament.

Our local elected member Mr Frank McVeety (Petitions Committee Convener) has pledged his full support for this petition.

We launched the petition in the Dalmarnock Centre on Tuesday 1st September.
